Death By Oreo Cupcakes

My little boy is turning 3 today so I made these for his birthday, and they turned out so yummy! They are probably the best Oreo cakes I have ever tried. A lot of cake's that I have experimented with before are like a vanilla cake with bits of Oreo in them, which didn't really give them enough Oreo flavor. But these were a lot better. I used a dark chocolate fudge cake mix instead of just a regular chocolate cake mix, which went really well with the cookies and gave the cakes just a little more flavor. So, in this recipe there is Oreo's in the cake, in the frosting, and...

At the bottom is a Oreo surprise. That's right, you put a whole Oreo at the bottom of the cake. The cookie stays firm, which makes it a little interesting to eat against the soft cake, but it actually gave a really yummy crunch. Overall this is an amazing cake. Super full of flavor and so fun!! Enjoy :)

Estimated Cooking Time: About 25 to 30 minutes

Ingredients
  • 1 package Oreo Cookies, regular size
  • 1 package Mini Oreo Cookies, for decoration (optional)
  • 1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), room temperature
  • 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cupcake liners

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix packaged cake mix according to directions (do not bake). Line cupcake tins with liner, place a regular size Oreo cookie in the bottom of each liner. Take 1/2 of remaining cookies and chop coarsely and add to cake mix.

Fill the cupcake tins. Bake for 15 minutes (or according to box directions. While cupcakes are baking make the frosting. (By the way, this is what the directions say, but I would say it bakes for more like 18 to 20 minutes)

Cream together butter and cream cheese. Add vanilla, then add powdered sugar slowly until blended well. Chop remaining regular-sized Oreos very fine (I put the cookies in the food processor instead of trying to chop them up super fine and it worked out really well). Add to frosting. After cupcakes have cooled frost and decorate with Mini Oreos.

I've been searching for an Oreo frosting recipe that *doesn't* call for shortening. Thank you for making my dreams come true!

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

Scratch-Made Wife- I'm glad I could be of some help :) I'm not the hugest fan of shortening in my frosting either so I tend to try and avoid those recipes. But I hope you like them! Thanks for commenting :)

Would substituting the chocolate cake mix with white cake mix work too?

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

Yeah, you could do white cake mix too. I don't know if it will have as much flavor as the chocolate would, but the frosting has a ton of flavor, so you might be able to get away with it.

My sister and I made these cupcakes!
We used Devils Food Cake instead of plain chocolate cake and they were SO GOOD!
My sister, who doesn't even really like desserts, loved them!
The icing was especially delicious!
I love your blog, by the way, it's so cute!

What are the measurements in grams roughly? Im from the UK and we don't generally use cups or ounces or anything because of the whole metric thing....

@Anonymous I found something online that converted it, so I believe this is right. 227 g cream cheese, 113 g butter, 848 g powdered sugar, and 5 g vanilla. Hope this helps.

excuse me..one question for foodsnots. ^_^ Do we need to cool the frosting in the refrigerator firsr before we actually put it on top of the cupcake? TQ.

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

@alKhattab Batik - Classic Elegant Unique No you shouldn't. If your frosting is too thin, then you can just add a little more powdered sugar until piping or spreading consistency, but your frosting shouldn't stay out for more then a couple of hours since it contains cream cheese. So it's probably a good idea to refrigerate the leftovers. Hope this answered your question :)

wow these look so scrumptious!! definately will try these out! just afraid i might end up eating all of them, i love oreo's
how many does it make?

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

@BELLArt Thank you!! I'm the same. I have a weakness for anything Oreo ;) It ends up making between 26 to 30 cupcakes.

Brittany said... Best Blogger Tips

When I made mine, the cream filling of the oreo on the bottom melted away. Don't know why it happened but it did...dang. But it was still good! Love them :) and the frosting!

Leila said... Best Blogger Tips

The Oreo surprise is truly surprising. I didn't think that the cookie would remain firm at the bottom of the pan. Thanks for the recipe.

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

@Leila It does stay hard. I've had some people tell me that they have soaked the Oreo in milk before though, and that it softened it so you don't have quite the crunch on the bottom. I've never tried it though, so I don't know, but you could try that if you didn't like how firm the cookie stays.

hello!
I really want to try these out this weekend for valentine's day (: but I'll be making them the night before, so could u give me some advice on whether I should refrigerate them since the frosting contains cream cheese? I'm afraid the cupcakes will turn soggy if I put them in the fridge n bring it to school the next day! but if I leave them in ye open after making will the cream cheese turn bad or melt? thank you so much!

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

Yes, the frosting should stay refrigerated, but there are a couple things you can do. Usually I'll make my cupcakes and the frosting (keeping them separate) and then just assemble/frost them before I serve them, but you can also frost them and just stick the whole cupcake in the fridge. I've never had a problem with mine going soggy and I have done that before. Usually you'll only have that problem with like ganaches and runnier frostings. But they should do fine either way. Hope this helps :)

hello (: thank you do much for ur reply!!! have a nice day ahead (:

yianna said... Best Blogger Tips

hi how many oreo we use

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

There are about 30 Oreos in a package, give or take a view. But to be honest, I used a little more.

Anonymous said... Best Blogger Tips

Do we need to spray the cupcake liners? I know this probably a silly question but somethings tell you too and some do not.

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

No you don't need to spray the cupcake liners. Just line the cupcake pan with paper liners and your set to start filling!!

Where did you get this recipe??

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

It's from www.justapinch.com.

Your samples look delicious. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Charis Sellick said... Best Blogger Tips

Do you think these could be made into a cake?

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

Definitely! I can't say exactly how long you would need to bake it for though :/ Or if you put the Oreos on the bottom of the cake sheet how they are gonna react with the longer baking time. But the cake and frosting portion of it would work for sure!! You might just want to experiment with it a little before you actually make it for an event.

do u add the butter and everything to regular frosting or is that the frosting itself

tickety60 said... Best Blogger Tips

Mmmm!

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

No, not regular packaged frosting. You make the frosting from scratch in this recipe.

I am bringing them to my daughters class for her birthday. I think the class is eating it around 2ish...If I bring them in at 11, do they need to be refrigerated due to the frosting??? Last year I made this (and her class loved them), but I cheated and used the pre-made cream cheese frosting and added oreo cookies. This year I want to do it the "right way"

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

They should be fine. I left mine out for a birthday party, and they were fine. As an alternative, if you are worried about it, you could always just freeze them. But I think they would be fine.

Anonymous said... Best Blogger Tips

How do you get the frosting to look like that??

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

You mean the swirl? Practice, and You Tube videos. I just went and typed in either frosting cupcakes, or piping frosting on cupcakes. Here is a link to that with some good frosting technique videos. Hope this helps :) http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=piping+frosting+on+cupcakes&oq=piping+frosting+on+cupcakes&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_l=youtube.3..0.7025.7519.0.7796.3.3.0.0.0.0.84.210.3.3.0...0.0.ssA3vHvTCyA

What tool(s) do you use to pipe the frosting? And where did you get those darling cup cake papers? Do you have any Reese's Peanutbutter cupcake recipes? Thanks!

I always try this for the kids ,, they are loving it <3

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

On this cupcake, and most of my classic swirls I use a Wilton 1M tip.

Someone said... Best Blogger Tips

i'm not to sure about the cream cheese, is there something else i can use?

FoodSnots said... Best Blogger Tips

You could always just make white or buttercream frosting and add the Oreos like you would in this frosting.

I was sooooo excited to make this for my birthday dinner as I am such an Oreo lover...
Everything turned out fine and I loved it to death! The only problem was my adult guests found it too sweet and didn't go for seconds as they normally would with my other desserts, as they are used to my sugar-free or less-sugar treats. :(
Is there a way to make it less sweeter without affecting the outcome of the cupcake or the icing for that matter?

LUV your blog by the way! :)

I love this recipe and my kids, and their friends, absolutely love this recipe. I use the dark chocolate cake mix for a less sweet cake and I don't add crushed Oreo's to the frosting. I do top the cupcakes with crushed Oreo's and the Mini Oreo's. I think that is the kids favorite part. Thanks for the fabulous recipe!! For the best results on cupcakes that make it longer than a day I keep them in the fridge. I think I will take a few and throw them in the deep dark basement freezer though, they might make it a few days longer that way...haha!!

I baked these for my best friend's family and they came out awesome. Although I only got 12 we threw the rest into a cake pan for a yummy mini cake so the cupcakes didn't get lonely. The family loved them, and so did my co workers who got the leftovers :) I blogged about it here: http://lauradoodleshere.blogspot.com/2012/09/laura-cooks-death-by-oreo-cupcakes.html
